It is the first documented case of civilian deaths caused by a fully autonomous Russian drone.
The drone used a commercially available Nvidia Jetson Orin computer costing a few hundred dollars and had no antennas or human pilot. It was programmed to reach a specific gas station, then independently identified and targeted propane tanks using AI trained to recognize specific objects.
Ukrainian investigators found unencrypted terrain images and targeting code on the chip, allowing them to determine what objects the drone had been trained to detect and attack.
